Finding Joy in Simplicity
There was a turning point in my life when I realized I no longer wanted all the excess surrounding me. For years, I thought happiness was waiting inside the next “thing”—a bigger house, nicer furniture, the newest phone, or the trendiest clothes. I convinced myself that more meant better.
But here’s the strange part: the more I had, the less content I felt. I was always chasing. Always reaching. Always believing the next upgrade would finally bring peace.
It didn’t.
Instead, I found peace in the opposite direction—through simplifying.
Why “More” Doesn’t Satisfy the Brain
Science actually helps explain this endless chase. Each time we buy something new, our brain releases a hit of dopamine, the chemical tied to reward and pleasure. But that rush is temporary. Our brains adapt quickly, and before long, the thrill fades—a process called hedonic adaptation.
That’s why the new iPhone feels exciting in your hand on day one, but a year later you’re already itching for the next release. The cycle never ends.
A dopamine detox (the practice of reducing overstimulation from constant scrolling, shopping, or snacking) can reset this system. By pulling away from constant “quick hits,” your brain begins to notice joy in the small, simple things again. Science shows that when we slow dopamine overload, the brain’s reward pathways recalibrate—so ordinary experiences like cooking, walking outside, or sitting in silence become deeply satisfying once more.
The Pleasure of the Simple Life
When I embraced simplicity, I discovered that joy doesn’t need bells and whistles. It just needs presence.
For me, joy looks like:
Time with my daughter – the giggles, the cuddles, the magic of watching her discover the world.
Yoga – not as a workout to achieve something, but as a way to return to myself.
Cooking – simple meals that connect me to the rhythms of nourishment and care.
Breath and space – remembering that I don’t have to fill every minute with productivity.
The beauty of a simplified life is that the smallest things expand in significance. A quiet moment, a home-cooked meal, a shared laugh. These are not “less than”—they’re everything.
Simplicity Isn’t Lack, It’s Freedom
Choosing simplicity doesn’t mean deprivation. It means choosing freedom: freedom from comparison, from constant striving, from the weight of “too much.”
It means realizing you don’t need the latest trend to feel alive—you just need presence.
And in that presence, you rediscover a truth many of us forget: life was never meant to be about accumulation. It was meant to be about connection.
If you’ve felt yourself caught in the endless chase for more, try pausing. Step back from the noise. Let yourself notice the joy of something small and ordinary. That might be where happiness has been waiting for you all along.
